Using innovation to light our world sustainably

Here at www.astredu.nz one of our main goals is to raise awareness about the importance of the night sky and how to protect and preserve natural darkness. We do this not just because we value the Cosmos, but because the night sky is integral to our wellbeing and that of the environment.
We are particularly interested in innovative, energy efficient and environmentally sensitive lighting because the world needs sustainable solutions to overcome light pollution. Best lighting practices are the way forward.
Thankfully, advances in technology offer systems that can meet a wide range of lighting requirements, including those that adapt to changing conditions. This is welcome news because towns and cities can select the best options for their particular needs, instead of following a one size fits all, blanket approach.
Best lighting practices involves choosing the most effective, economical and healthy way to illuminate the areas we inhabit. Using these principles as a guide, we can enhance and transform any space - not just roads, streets, buildings and workplaces.
(Those councils and authorities wanting to upgrade their street lighting can save a great deal of time and money if they seek the advice of experts who understand best lighting practices and have been involved in the establishment of successful night sky communities.)
Above is an excellent example in Eindhoven, Netherlands, of an energy-neutral illuminated bicycle path that uses solar charged pigments. The design was inspired by Van Gogh’s painting ‘Starry Night,’ and celebrates the wonder and beauty of the night.
With care and consideration we can light our lives far more intelligently to save energy and money, improve our health, protect the environment, lower the crime rate, and ensure the night sky is visible to everyone who wants to enjoy it, for generations to come.
